Artist statements are so important, to explain your artistic inspirations as well as to highlight your skills and experience.
A statement is not an opportunity to confuse the reader and make your art a mystery to them. Could you read your statement aloud to a neighbour or a stranger with a straight face? Would someone uninitiated into the art world have a clue about what you have written? If the answer to either of these questions is no, then your statement needs rewriting.
It can be hard to write positively about yourself, which is why I have been asked countless times to write statements for artists. A statement is a key part of applying for work, whether it is an exhibition, a studio, funding application, commission, project or residency. It gives an insight into you as an artist and needs to truly reflect you. Having someone write it with you can take the stress out of finding the best words to talk about you and your work.
